The New Trust Newspaper has gathered that, a cross section of Ghanaians interviewed prefer Commissioner of Police, Mr.Nathan Kofi Boakye to become the next Inspector General of Police(IGP) as the current IGP and his Deputy are expected to exit from the service this year.
The name of Kofi Boakye has come up strongly to help combat of crime and other related criminal activities in the country especially in this era when the country has come together to support President Nana Addo’s call for the disbandment of various vigilante groups ahead of 2020 general elections.
Cross section of Ghanaians interviewed as well as leading members of governing New Patriotic Party and the largest opposition party,NDC believed in the professionalism of Kofi Boakye and his modus operandi of combating crime whenever he is given the opportunity of service.
The New Trust Newspaper has learnt that, those in the Ashanti region in particular who have missed instrumental role in fighting criminals especially car snatchers, armed robbers among others believed that, this is the time Mr. Boakye must be given the opportunity to lead Ghana Police Service as Inspector General of Police devoid of politics.
A top regional executive of NPP in the Ashanti region who also spoke on condition of anonymity said currently the Minister of Interior and Minister of Defense are from the Northern part of Ghana and if we have a professional police officer from Ashanti region, who is very competent and can help ensure modern policing why should we hide behind partisan politics or whatsoever to deprive him of this position?
This paper can authoritatively report that, about 73 percent of a cross section of Ghanaians spoke to on their expectation of who their preferred person to become the next IGP, mentioned Mr.Kofi Boakye.
His recent strong warning preceding the President, Nana Akufo-Addo state of the Nation Address to implore on all Ghanaians especially political actors to disband all political parties’ vigilante groups or party militias is till refreshing in the minds of our interviewees.
To them, COP Kofi Boakye is one of the top Police Officers in Ghana who has made a good name for himself throughout all the positions he has served. One Madam Ataa Fordjour, a resident of Kumasi who was willing to mention her name said “armed robbers and kidnappers among criminals are having a free day but I clearly remember that, during Kofi Boakye’s tenure of commanding the Ashanti regional Police force, armed robbers in the region always lived in perpetual fear of arrest.
I am pleading with President Akufo-Addo that when the current IGP and his Deputy Term ends he should appoint Kofi Boakye as the next IGP and I can assure all Ghanaians that, he will justify our confidence reposed in him.A number of Police personnel who spoke on the subject have also tipped Mr.Boakye as the next IGP. With one accord in their submission, they revealed that, politicization of the security services is killing the moral of the personnel due to politicization of some positions and promotions but for once,President Akufo-Addo should put a deaf ears to those who kick-against the appointment of Mr.Kofi Boakye as the next IGP.The man has what it takes to instill discipline and more importantly how he use his intelligence gathering to ensure effective policing”,they added.
